About Me

I have been diving since 1988, started in South Africa and did all my training with NAUI. We were taught on horse collars and backpacks. My openwater II included learning about (not doing) deep dives over 100 meters using pony bottles and the formulas for tying bottles onto the guide rope. I wish I had kept my notes. I have since been told that this was done in error. US Navy diver's manual has it all though.  I did my master diver on Protea Banks where we dived with Zambesi Sharks. They are responsible for most of the attacks on humans, these dives proved to me that they do not normally consider us to be food.  I completed my instructors and actually taught 4 classes before the insurance became too expensive to keep up as a hobby. Now at over 50, I am a social diver and only dive when conditions are perfect.

As a child my father took us to Mocambique, Paradise Island, Mocambique island and Pemba (Formerly Porto Amelia)Reunion, the Comores and Mauritius, where I was able to snorkel to my heart's content. The only reason I learnt to scuba was because Mocambique was a no go zone and Sodwana coral was too deep for snorkelling. I dont mind a scuba.. if it is the only way to see the fish life under the water.

I now live on Vanuatu where again I am very fussy where I dive. Hat Island and Pauls rock are two lovely dive sites but I enjoy puttering around in front of my home just as much.

We have a small reef in front of the house which goes down to about 25 meters. The coral and fish live at 40 meters is different again and also enjoyable. Have done at least 5 dives here.  Samoa Point near our home goes down to 50 meters and we hit a pleasant reef at 25 meters.

I do not like diving with commercial diving organisations. I have had two different sets of commercial master divers think that it is OK to push me into the water when I was donning my kit which is totally unacceptable. Lembongaan near Bali and a dive organisation in Perth. We now have our own compressor and we dive at our leisure when we feel like it. It means that we do not have to deal with stressed businessmen trying to push through numbers. My son helps me with all my diving as sadly I now have a weak back and cannot lift cylinders out of water.
